On Work

Many people in this day and age would probably agree that staying in the same job for too long is not necessarily a good thing. In the past, people would consider it a success when a person stayed in a job for a long time and maybe even retired in the same job one started out with.

I think it was a tough choice for me when it was time for me to move on from my first workplace after more than 5 years. I was already too comfortable and knew most of the people at my workplace. However, after leaving and starting work at another place, I realised, I should have left sooner. I do not regret my decisions, my journey did lead me to where I want to be today. I would recommend my juniors though, to keep an open mind and maybe not stay in a place for too long.

I stayed on at the same workplace mainly due to not knowing what I wanted to do and I thought it was safer staying in a place I was familiar with. After exploring new places and trying out new things, you will come to understand what you are most interested in doing. It might be the same goal as when you first started out working or it might change.

As a new journey is about to begin, again. I started to look back on when I first started work and the journey I took. It was not an easy journey with loads of ups and downs, but I do not regret anything. Do I know what will happen in the future? Will I stay in my next job for a longer time? I have no idea, I hope that I will be able to learn and grow, and hopefully enjoy my next workplace enough to stay there for a few more years.

Just a quick update and a record to look back to in the future.

Stay safe and healthy everyone ♥

Increasing Awareness of Preschool Teachers ♥︎

Hello friends! This time I'm writing a somewhat different kind of post but since my blog started out as a personal reflection blog, I thought I shouldn't stop writing content just like before. So, occasionally, I will write some posts like that. Just random reflections and thoughts of mine that may or may not interest readers.

For this post, as the title states, it'll be about preschool teachers. I think it's an industry that people don't really pay much attention to locally and it just doesn't have a lot of recognition even amongst the general public. I'm not asking that everyone should think highly of preschool teachers but maybe if there was more awareness of what we go through. Then it could prevent a lot of issues.

What is the first thought that comes to your mind when someone tells you they're working as a preschool teacher? I would think the thoughts would vary from some positive ones like, "Wow, you have a lot of patience," to some negative ones like, "Oh, it must be easy! You just play with children all day."

Well, I wouldn't say that those aren't true. We do have to have a lot of patience and yes, we do play with children too but that's really on the surface. There are so many more things we do. It's probably difficult for an outsider to understand what goes on in a preschool. Even for parents who send their kids to preschool, they might not fully understand the extent of the job of a preschool teacher.

There are some parents who express their gratitude to their children's teachers, however I feel that it's because of the lack of understanding of what we do, most parents often don't show appreciation as they take that it's only right that we do all these things because they are paying school fees. But really, just a word of thanks can go a long way. I think it's really lacking as ECDA came up with a campaign to remind people to thank teachers.

Why do I think that increasing awareness for preschool teachers is important? Ultimately it affects the children who we care about and lives are so important. You might think how does not feeling appreciated affect the children?

This is an industry with a high turnover rate.

It actually does affect children when their teachers change all the time. Many people think that children are too young to understand or realise that their teacher changed but in fact they are able to realise and it affects them especially in forming secure attachments. It is a common practice to source out teachers from the younger age groups for that exact reason stated above. It's the younger ones that need consistency in their classrooms.

What causes this high turnover rate?

I feel that lack of recognition leading to low pay and also the heavy workload often leads to burnout. I'm probably not very good at explaining the points but they are actually quite interrelated.

I think most people out there may not know that preschool teachers have quite a lot of work to do aside from looking after the children there will be quite a lot of paperwork to complete. This often leads to burnout and burnout is when a teacher just becomes too tired and loses interest or becomes numb to the job. Most of the time it's also due to the fact that the pay is low and there are other jobs out there that has a higher pay and aren't so tiring.

Many feels that lack of recognition results in unable to have higher pay. With more people understanding that a preschool teacher's job is actually just as important as a primary or secondary school teacher, maybe the pay would increase as well. Since preschool education isn't mandatory, most parents would then overlook it's importance.

A few quick reasons why preschool is important.

Most overlook preschool years thinking that there's nothing much for them to learn during those few years. In fact, there are many essential skills that are picked up during these young years. A few of the more overlooked ones would be self-help skills and social skills.

It's often thought that children are too young to do things for themselves but in fact they're never too young to learn how to do things on their own. The more the adults help them with things, they'll be too reliant and never want to do things. Children like being independent and given opportunities to do things themselves. Of course, there are certain things that they would still require some assistance in but before offering help, show them how to do a task and then let them try to do it themselves.

For some children, parents are worried that they aren't talking when they're of talking age. That's because everything they need is given to them so there's no need for them to use their words. So usually the practice would be to give the child what he wants after letting him try to say the name of the item. As the child grows older, the child gradually would be able to repeat more words.

Social skills are also acquired during these early years as well. I'm quite surprised that paediatricians will recommend young patients to attend school so that they can make friends. It's important that they go to school to experience a social setting. They'll learn how to be caring towards others, how to share and how to interact with other people. Nowadays, parents are more informed so I think more people are aware about the importance of social skills.

In conclusion, there's really a lot more to preschool than just what most people think it is. We don't just look after the kids and the kids don't just play. They do play and have fun but there's many other processes going on behind that.

Haha anyway, this is just a random reflection and thoughts post. I haven't written one in ages. Maybe there'll be more of such posts in future. We'll see.

Expectations VS Reality ♥︎

I've been thinking... I've been reflecting on a lot things...

Things never seem to go as planned or they don't turn out the way I expected it to. But does this mean I should stop trying? Does it mean I should stop and not continue?

Most of the time, I'll stop and think. It's not that difficult to...

...even if I fall at least I'll land amongst the clouds right?

There are a few areas where I felt that I've raised my expectations too high that I need to stop for a reality check.

Work Expectations.

So far, I think there were a couple of times I've been discouraged while working. Although I've encouraging and supportive colleagues, there were times I just felt like there was nothing I could do despite being a graduate. Countless times, I've wished I was still studying so I could use that as my excuse when I meet difficult situations. I felt that everything at that point in time didn't go as well as expected.

But I guess I've learned to deal with my expectations. As much as I want to excel at work and maybe aim for some sort of promotion, I should take little steps first and celebrate every achievement. I shouldn't ignore the littlest of achievements and just go ahead to aim for higher goals without first telling myself, 'good job' or 'well done'. I feel that it would just make one lose focus if they don't stop to reflect.

Makeup Expectations.

This is a funny one. Sometimes I watch makeup tutorials or come across a makeup look that I really like, I would try it out the next day. I would expect it to look nice like in the video or in the photo. Does it turn out the way I expected it to? Of course not!

I think when it comes to makeup, it's pretty individualised. You've to be very familiar with your own face shape and face type. I've come to realise that not everything looks good on me even though it looks super good in the video or the photo.

I'm not especially good with my eyeliner. I actually have uneven eyes, right eye with double eyelids and left eye with half of a double eyelid. So drawing eyeliner can be such a hassle sometimes! I've to make sure it looks even and must make sure it's visible on the left eye because that eyelid tends to fold in hiding whatever line drawn. It makes it quite impossible to draw a cat eye!

Thankfully, I've somewhat come up with a routine on how to draw my eyeliner and apply my makeup so I think I'm quite exceptional to be able to apply my makeup within half an hour *applause*

Blog Expectations.

As much as I try my best to blog a few posts every week, it obviously doesn't happen. I start writing on something but the post just sits in my draft folder for the longest time. I think when I was schooling I just had more time to write and take photos and whatever. Now with work and everything, by the time I get home, my energy level is almost close to zero.

That's why I came up with a weekly schedule to ensure that at least once a week there'll be something being posted. So, every weekend there'll be a song recommendation post! I try to be regular in updating that unless I'm on holiday or on medical leave. Heh.

After changing my URL to this one, viewership has decreased quite a bit. Going to take some time for it to pick up again? Not to worry! It won't affect whatever I'm blogging since I blog regardless of how many readers I have. Hahaha so thick skin.

In conclusion, the most important thing about dealing with expectations would also be able to remind myself that everything comes from God. I shouldn't worry too much or expect too much or even be disappointed when I don't achieve something because everything comes from God. Also, if I achieve something, I must remember to thank God as I definitely wouldn't be able to get there without God's guidance and planning ^^

Decided to write this post in hopes of encouraging others and also as a reminder to myself! Hope it was useful to some!

Status Update ♥︎

What I've been up to
Just a quick blog post to update my blogging status. I've tried to blog more often and have more posts up frequently but because of the increase work load at work, I'm unable to finish my paperwork while I'm at work so I've been taking home work to do ㅠㅠ

I know it's not advisable since I should maintain a work-life balance but I don't want to end up being to behind on work stuff as well. Heh.

Anyway, as much as I can I'll try to finish up the posts I've been working on. I've a March makeup favourites posts coming soon! As well as new songs recommendation posts! Hehehe.

In the meantime, you can contact me through twitter (@almostkoreanme) or leave a question at ask.fm/fidtastic ! You can basically ask me anything related to anything Korean! I totally don't mind sharing my knowledge.

Also, do check out a close friend's blog! She blogs about makeup and food! So if you're from Singapore or planning a trip here, do check out some delicious places to go! http://www.jankliciouz.blogspot.sg/

Work Talk #5 ♥︎

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (Philippians 4:13)

I think I've a lot of things to think about and reflect on. I think like although I'm happy on the surface, there are many things I'm actually worried about. But then again, it's normal to worry cos I'm the type that worries. Hahaha. Not the first time I'm mentioning that I'm sure.

Firstly, the concert. I think this is the 3rd or 4th concert I've taken part in. Honestly, I'm always excited for these events but then when the event is over, I'm totally drained and I feel like I've aged. But nonetheless every concert is a good experience. As I think back and reflect on the recent one, I feel like I had a lot to learn. It's a little like, 'expectations versus reality' and there's this thin line separating the two. Sometimes we forget that there's that thin line and expect too much.

Anyhow, I strongly believe in children and their work. So I'll be proud no matter the outcome. But of course, they didn't disappoint! The show was great and everyone enjoyed their performance. I'm really proud of them and am really going to miss them when they leave :(

So...

The teams for next year have been announced. I'm quite thankful for my team. I was worried and all before but God always provides and there's a reason behind everything he does. So I'm actually looking at next year positively and I'm sure I'm able to handle whatever comes my way!

Looking forward to meeting the new kids and improving at what I do. Hopefully, slowly but surely, I'll be able to get better and get more confident with the experience I'm gaining. Although it's not always smooth sailing, I'm sure it'll be fine ^^

Actually, there are a lot of things I'm starting to think about. Mostly about what I want to do in the next few years. There's career progression to think about and also future studies. Surely, I'm not stopping at my degree. So I'll have to begin doing research on a suitable masters course. I've been thinking about taking a course on child psychology but it definitely doesn't sound easy at all. I don't know why I'm entertaining this thought but it always makes me curious as to why children would say something or do something a certain way. Hmm. I guess these are all things I've to pray about and think about some more.

Looking forward to a new beginning and hoping for a great 2015! It may sound early but the year starts early in this line of work. In fact, I might even lose track of when the year ends and begins because every year is just like a cycle.

Work Talk #2

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:" Ecclesiastes 3:1
Haven't blogged about work recently. It's slowly starting to get busier so I've like not had time to sit down and reflect on whatever that's going at work. I think recently I've had a lot on my mind and I'm still trying to figure things out.

Work life balance.

I think that's something I'm still trying to figure out. Sometimes, I've the urge to do work at home and my colleague told me I shouldn't bring work home to do. I've been trying to like get out of the student mindset where I had to do homework or do some work at home every other day. So in order to keep myself busy, I've been blogging and watching Korean dramas. But as the important deadlines draw nearer, I still can't help but want to do work at home. There's just not enough time to do work while working. If only I could cut myself into two.

Also, everyday after work, I'm like so drained. How can I meet up with friends? So far the only solution I've found is meeting up on Fridays or the weekends. But anyhow I usually mostly just meet Mich or Vaneh. So that's like all the socialising I do. Better than nothing right? But I think my body has gotten used to the sleeping and waking up times :>

I've to constantly remind myself to divide my time up so that not everything I do is just related to work only.

Enthusiastic VS Willingness to learn.

I think there's like a thin line between these two terms. I don't think I'm like super enthusiastic but I'm willing to learn. I mean being overly enthusiastic is usually viewed as a bad thing as someone who is enthusiastic or overly enthusiastic may not be willing to learn.

I'm still like trying to get the hang of things and learn as much as I can. I'm not afraid of trying but I still wouldn't take up tasks or do things I've no confidence in or unsure of. The consequences of my actions can be quite serious at times, if you know what I mean. But nonetheless, I've to remember that I'm no longer working part time and I've to slowly get used to being a full timer. There are many things that I'll get better in as the time goes by.

There are times that I also forget that I'm still considered a newbie. I have high expectations for myself and when I'm not able to meet them, I'll get a little discouraged. But then I'll remind myself that I still have a lot to learn! I'm thankful for the colleagues working in the same level, I've learnt a lot from them!

As the busy time comes, I hope that I will get enough rest and won't fall sick easily. There's an important purpose for me to go to work. There are these little people I've to think about even before I can think of myself. But it's ME TIME once I leave work!

Things Children Say #6 ♥

Almost forgot I had this series of blog posts! I started writing this when I was working last year just to record and remember the funny things children say. There are many funny things! And they're always constantly making me laugh! That's a plus point about my job I guess.

Recently I've been with the younger age group so I haven't had many funny conversations and they've yet to learn how to talk. But there were some instances that left me speechless.

Me: I'm so upset.
Toddler: Why?

Me: Alright, you've had 2 cups, that's enough milk!
Toddler: Why enough?
Me: Because there's no more.
Toddler: Why no more?
Me: ...

Other than the crying and chasing the kids around, it was funny hearing how the young ones called me. As you may already know, my name isn't easy to pronounce. It's really cute how they say my name and just keep repeating it.

Children: Teacher Fur-deh-leah (most of the time)

Child: Teacher Fa-da-la

Child: Teacher Fur-da-la

It's really cute though! Cos they I respond to them and it's like they know they can call me know. But by the time they started calling me by name, which was around last week, my time with them has expired and I've to move on. I mean it's for the better and I'll definitely miss them though I will still probably see them around ><

There'll be more of such funny posts in the weeks to come, hopefully! Sometimes I wanna talk about work but I don't know where and how to start. It's still pretty overwhelming at times. Maybe I'll write about it when I've settled even more ^^

Things Children Say #5

Girl: Can we hear that song that you let us hear that day again?
Me: What song?
Girl: The one that goes sexy.
Me: Laughs. It's called Growl.

Boy: Comes cuddle next to me while everyone is reading.
Me: Why? Go read a book.
Boy: Shakes head.
Me: Thinks something is wrong and just lets him stay by my side.
Boy: Takes a deep breath all of a sudden. You know what's the plant that you get after level 8?
Me: Plants versus zombie again?

Boy 1: Teacher, Boy 2 was playing and he held the ball with 2 hands and placed it in the goal.
Me: Oh, tell him not to do that next time because it cheating.
Boy 1: Okay. Runs back to friends happily.
Boy 2: Heard his friend complaining to me and starts crying.
Me: Walks over calmly. Why are you crying? It's only a game and it wasn't right of you to hold the ball and place it in the goal right? It's okay. Stop crying and go back to play okay?
Boy 2: Tears spilling from his eyes.
Me: Do you still want to play?
Boy 2: Shakes head.
Me: Okay, then do you want to sit down?
Boy 2: Doesn't reply but lets me take him to the bench.
Me: It's okay. It's just a game!
Boy 2: Sobs. Mumbles I want to play with my brother.
Me: Oh, you miss your brother? Shall we go peep into his classroom?
Boy 2: Nods.
Me: Okay, let's go. Then you'll stop crying okay?
Boy 2: Peeps into his brother class, sees his brother and immediately stops crying.

Had to help out in another class today instead of being with the class I was normally helping.
Girl: Where were you?
Me: I was in another class the whole day.
Girl: Are you going home now?
Me: Yes, it's 1 o' clock.
Girl: Gives me a big hug. Then stretches out her arms and legs to block my way. I'm not letting you go.

Hahaha. After spending about 6 weeks with this class of children. I'm feeling a little sad to leave. They've grown on me and I think we've gotten quite close during this period of time.

Things Children Say #4

Eating my lunch quietly.
3 year old boy: (quietly comes beside me and looks into my bowl) *Whispers* Is it spicy?
Me: Nope
Boy: (looks into bowl again) Is there chilli? Is it spicy?
Me: Nope there's no chilli and it's not spicy *smiles*

Spent the whole morning in another class away from my usual class.
Me: Hi boys! I'm back!
Boy: Where did you go?
Another boy: You're back only now?
Me: Did you miss me?
Silence from all the boys.
Me: Aww so nobody missed me. Then tomorrow I won't come back.
Boy: I got! I got miss you!
Another boy: Me too!
Me: HAHAHA!

Told my mum and she was like so desperate I was like NO but I'm telling you these boys are really cheeky and they know how to play hard to get.

Had a music and movement session with the children.
Me: What are some other songs you know?
Boy: Can we not sing English songs?
Another boy: OPPA GANGNAM STYLE!
Me: Please, no Oppa Gangnam Style. English children songs please.

Ends up playing guess the song from the actions. Just finished singing twinkle twinkle little star and itsy bitsy spider.
Me: (quietly thinking)
Boy: Teacher Fidelia can I try doing the actions?
Me: Sure! Okay everyone __ has a song for you to guess.
Boy: Starts doing gangnam style actions.
Me: No no, children songs please.

Things Children Say #3

In the bus on a field trip.
Me: (points out window at some cranes and tells the children around me) Look over there, do you see that? Those are transformers.
Boy: (looks carefully) Where?
Me: (points at the cranes again) Over there! Do you see it?
Boy: Oh! Yes!

After the performance ended.
Two girls stood up, clapped their hands above their heads and kept cheering continuously. Definitely child version of a standing ovation.

Had a discussion with the children about the play they watched.
Me: Did you find it scary when the wolf came out?
Girl: Um... A little bit (shows a little bit with her fingers)
Boy: I wasn't scared at all!
Me: That's right! Nothing to be afraid of right? They are just people dressed up in costumes.
Children: *noisily agrees*

Me: So what happened to the mother and the wolf in the end? (the mother actually ate the berries turning her into a wolf, which meant that the original wolf is actually the father. He too turned into the wolf after eating the berries)
Boy: She ate the berries and turned into the wolf then later she became the mother again.
Girl: No~ It wasn't the berries, it was the singing angels.

During lunch.
Boy: Teacher Fidelia, this is my second helping.
Me: Wow. Are you that hungry today?
Boy: No. I've soccer later. Where am I going to get the energy unless I eat two servings.
Me: HAHAHA okay!

Eavesdropping on the conversation of two boys.
Boy A: You know the game plants versus zombies?
Boy B: (stammering in excitement) Yes of course! Do you have the plants or the zombies?
Boy A: (keeps quiet and looks confused)
Boy B: Oh oh I mean do you have plants versus zombie 1 or 2?

It's concert preparation time again and my dear boys kept fussing over their hairstyles during the rehearsal.
Boy: Teacher Fidelia I think you need to put more gel. (fixes his hair) I made it stand up like that.
Me: So you want it to stand up? I'll do that for you tomorrow.
Boy: Yes you'll need to use more gel.
Me: Okay. I'll use the whole tub.
Boy: (seems to believe me) Huh then you'll have to buy more tubs of gel. (turns to fix his friends hair) See I made his hair stand up too.
Me: (to other boy) You want your hair like that too tomorrow?
Other boy: Yes!
Me: Looks like I'll have to put the whole tub of gel too.
Boys: HUH (burst out laughing) Okay.

Me: (styling the boys hair) I'm going to make you look like a Korean superstar!
Boy: Like Oppa Gangnam style!
Me: Please no Oppa Gangnam style, I don't like it.
Sometime later.
Another boy: What's your favourite Korean? (i think he meant singer)
Me: Super Junior. I'm going to make you all look like them. *Grins*

Things Children Say #2

Overheard a boy telling his friends rather seriously: By the age of 35 I'll be married with kids.
Toddler misbehaves and another toddler caught him.
(Holding up a pretend phone and calling another teacher): Hello teacher, ___ is doing *mumbles mumbles* okay bye bye.

The children would have to pay me money for drying their hair.
They would just tap my hand or swipe my hand if they decide to use credit card.
The first boy paid 100 dollars.
Me: (drying the second boy's hair) Everyone has to pay me 100 dollars. Wow your hair is long.
First boy: What about me? (This boy has really short army cut hair)
Me: Okay you can pay me 50 dollars.

A girl was looking at my water bottle covered in Super junior, EXO, SHINee and ZEA pictures.
Girl: Who are they?
Me: Handsome? Which is handsome?
Girl: (points at Hyungsik)
Me: (points at another photo of Hyungsik) This one handsome?
Girl: (looks closely) No. (Points to photo of Sungmin below) This one is also handsome. (Looks at pictures again) Are there any girls?
Me: Nope, they are all boys. Why? Do you see a girl?
Girl: (points to a photo of Baekhyun)
Me: (laughs) That's a boy! And he has the same birthday as me! (Looks at the girl on my other side) You know it's like you and your twin. Both of you have the sqme birthday right? Yes, this guy and I we are not twins.

Haha. Everyday with these children, I'm going to have tons of such posts with the funny things they say. It's so ridiculous sometimes I don't know whether I should laugh or be angry with them. Haha. I'll be working until the end of November. Time passes pretty quickly here. Hehe.

Me: (To a boy) We recorded the song yesterday after you went home.
Boy: Huh how?
Me: We recorded whoever who was there but we need to record again later because they were too slow.
Boy: (looks down and shakes his head)

Boy: (holds up his bottle) Why does my bottle keep leaking?
Me: Let me check if it's closed tight. (turns bottle upside down and water leaks out) Oh, I think you should tell your mum.
Boy: Yeah and buy a new bottle. (looks down) *SIGH* Have to spend money again.

The Things Children Say #1

Me to a toddler: (points to my water bottle covered with pictures of SJ, SHINee and EXO) Do you know who this is?
Toddler: (smiles happily) Uncle.

Me: Okay, I'm going to read this story.
Boy: Teacher Fidelia, the pirate will find the crew in the end and Santa Claus will come.
Me: Um... Okay I haven't read this story before so let's read it together.

Me: We're playing the quiet game so I don't want to hear any talking.
Children: (total silence)
10 minutes later.
Me: We are going to the music room and the quiet game will end there.
On the way there.
Children: (whispers) Are we still playing the quiet game?

Things I say during nap time to children who are not sleeping or playing:
  • If you don't need your mattress, I'm going to take it away.
  • Close your eyes, I don't want to see your eyeballs.
Child and I carrying a bunch of things and the classroom door is closed.
Child: Oh no! How?
Me: Wait...
Child: (Shouts super loudly) HELLO GUYS HELP US!
Me: Opens door calmly.
Child: (skips into classroom) Hello girls~ I'm back~

A collection of funny things children say at work. There are many stories that I have but unfortunately I can't remember everything so therefore I decided to write it down every time children say something funny. Hehehe.
